Historically, there have always been two sides to this faction; the Cymrijans and the People of Erin. Together they are known as the The Dragons. The most important thing to understand about the Dragons is that we are a Celtic themed faction. We draw heavily on ancient Irish and Welsh mythological themes (but we do not copy them), and attitudes for the faction's history and plot and we attempt to role-play as we think these ancient people would have acted.
Do not let this put you off telling the 'old' stories around the campfire, what is LRP if not one big campfire tale?
If anyone tries to stop you because "that's not the way it really happened" - then clearly they have become way too long in the tooth and need sending to the glue factory!
The old legends and myths do, however, along with the information on this website, form an excellent starting point for your character's IC knowledge. But, as with any legend and myth - the truth may be different to what your character and you knows.
Recent communication with the players have guided the plot team to a theme that will allow players to be "Shiny Mortal Heroes" against a dark background. Of course, if you don't want to be a shiny hero, then we always need a dark side.
In recent years the faction has begun to develop a strong relationship with some of the Celtic traditions. Of particular note, the Celts viewed life with a 'resurrection/rebirth' attitude, and believed that when you died you went to join your ancestors, until you were reborn. As such they had little fear of fighting heroic battles with the odds stacked against them.
Do not, however, feel that you have to play a Celtic character. The Dragons have had a variety of superb units that have followed completely different lines, and have been a lot more civilised than the Celts would have been. Currently we have a sizable number of Navy characters (who could be mistaken for being pirates...).
This website is intended as a starting point for players who wish to learn about the faction or to create a character. It is worth noting that there is a distinct format to the site. This page for example is intended for Out-of-Character (OOC) use, which means that you, the player, knows this information, but your character will not, unless you learn it somehow in character. All OOC pages are displayed like this, with a grey edge and in a fairly normal typeface. The second type of page on this site is intended to be used In-Character (IC), they are displayed with a brown edge and in a different typeface. However, your character will not necessarily know all the information that is available - this is especially true for new characters, who are unlikely to know much more than information on the province that they come from.
We always try and accommodate players with any character within the faction. However there are certain lines that should not be crossed.
Here are some of them:
- Your new character is your old characters identical twin or clone
- Your new character posses your old characters incredibly detailed diary
- Your new character has a telepathic link with your old character
- Your new character looks identical to your old character (i.e. change your costume)
- Your new character knows who assassinated your last character
- Your new character pursues your old characters vendetta's and objectives
- Your character is Legolas, Darth Maul, Cpt Jack Sparrow, or any other character blatantly ripped off from fiction
- Your new character is your old character
If you are new to the Dragons, or to live-roleplaying in general, it is probably easier not to create a hugely detailed and sweeping background. This way you will avoid clashing with plot, history or other characters. Simply work out where in the Dragons you want your character to originate from, choose a name and find out a few relevant facts, such as who your King is.
You may choose that your character has an overused clichéd 'Conan' style background but, it is far more likely that your character comes from humbler beginnings. This is not to say that your character is dull, as recent events, such as Imperial Invasion may have caused the death of your family, or the Cataclysm of 1106 destroyed your farm and livelihood.
Finally, there are two items that are particularly important within the Lorien Trust Live Role-Play system.
Firstly, you can only have one living character running at a time. If you want to change characters, your current character must die or be retired formally with the Lorien Trust at one of their main events. Whether you choose to die or retire, there is no going back to your earlier incarnation.
Secondly this whole hobby is a Live system. There is no such thing as 'downtime', and although your character will technically be doing things between events, they will fundamentally be inconsequential. The Dragons do provide an online forum (The Dragons Muster), where you can talk IC and OOC to people you have met at events, however players frown upon 'ley-heroes', and if you insult or upset somebody between events, expect them to come looking for you in the ancient Dragon tradition.
